Proprietors Leigh Melander and Mark Somerfield have saved one of the great camps built by the Fleischmanns Yeast family, a 33 acre estate centered around a superb Stick-Style mansion with extraordinary oil murals painted on clear pine paneled walls, honoring both its traditions as a family retreat and a summer hotel. Spillian is an old English word that means 'to play, to jest, or to revel.' Our goal&nbsp;is to share a place where people can play with new &nbsp;ideas, imagine past what they think is possible, lightly, and with delight. Spillian welcomes custom-designed group and corporate retreats, reunions, weddings, and offers a growing array of workshops exploring how visitors can imagine past what they believe is possible in a variety of disciplines.&nbsp;

As I write this, we’re enjoying 40+ degree temperatures, and it’s been one of the mildest Catskill winters on record. In just a few weeks, the the skiers will begin melting away, and the streams will be running pure and clear with snow melt. Hikers will be shedding their winter layers, the robins and sparrows will be building nests, and the trees will turn heavy with buds. To celebrate, we’re having our 6th annual Catskills Trout Tales weekend at Spillian, and you’re invited as our complimentary guest, to partake in the food, drink and activities all around Spring and the opening of Trout Fishing Season! An original murderous adventure steeped in the gin-spiked glamor of the 20’s. It’s a Spillian created mystery, with characters drawn from literature and history, inspired by the lore of 20’s icons (and gangsters!) who once roamed the Catskills mountains looking for entertainment, escape from the prying eyes of the police and, well, a bit of nefarious activity. We’re thrilled to offer you a chance to dive into this mystery — part of our partnership with friend and filmmaker Alex Harvey as he shapes an upcoming full length independent feature film set at Spillian with this mystery at its heart. Come and be a part of a murder…and the birth of a film! When you arrive… You all have received your invitations for Jack Goodwin and Violet DeWitt’s famous – or infamous – birthday house party in their Catskills mansion. It’s going to be a party that was far more than (most of you) planned for… A mystery whodunnit in high style. As F. Scott himself said, “Never miss a party…good for the nerves–like celery.” When you arrive… You all have received your invitations for Jack Goodwin and Violet DeWitt’s famous – or infamous – birthday house party in their Catskills mansion. It’s going to be a party that was far more than (most of you) planned for… A mystery who-dunnit in high style. As F. Scott himself said, “Never miss a party…good for the nerves–like celery.” This year, you have been invited for the weekend up to their Catskills cottage (really a rustically luxurious estate) for an informal dinner and dancing, with good gin flowing out of the reach and eyes of the New York police. Or the Feds. To entertain their guests, the Goodwins have secured the services of a famous Russian Gypsy medium, Madame Plavatski, for the evening on Saturday to tell fortunes to those guests who wish to see into their future and remember their past. You may know some of the guests, you won’t know all of them. And you may not trust any of them. You may well have secrets you want to keep to yourself and there’s a darn good chance that you’re not alone. But come, enjoy some hot jazz, get just a bit splifficated, and remember, if anything goes wrong, keep your friends close and your enemies closer…

We all know January–the time of the year when holiday delights have faded into the snow and the dark cold nights of winter threaten despair… Come push against the darkness, and join us for a seriously silly celebration of the words and song of the Ploughman Poet, Robert Burns. Indulge your whimsey, and join in the revelry as we enjoy the smoky taste of great whiskey, the play of candlelight against silver, the wail of the bagpipes and a feast, a great feast of the Hallowed Haggis… Hilarity will ensue. What the hell is Haggis, you ask? It’s liver, tongue and other unmentionable bits together with Scottish oats, onions, stock and herbs all cooked together into “the great chieftain o’ the pudding race.” Put away your mocking thoughts, and know that this is one delicious bit of pie. And, for those who dare not, we’re also concocting a vegetarian version o’ the great and powerful Haggis. Wear a kilt, yourself, and get a special deal on the weekend. Bring on the kilts! Join us as we push back winter’s dark cloak with games, verse, drinks and superb food, all invoking – and evoking – your inner Highlander. A mythic winter adventure, celebrating the extraordinary dance between the frosted Catskills and the flames of a blazing hearth. Come to the mountains, where wood smoke cuts across the sharp air of January and the forests are made of deep dreams… Spillian is delighted to partner with Upstate Adventure Guides to invite you to come and explore the glories of the Catskills mountains in the winter, and the evocative intersections between fire and ice in feasting, stories, and imagination. This is the perfect adventure for those who’ve been curious about wandering into the mountains in the winter but not quite sure where to start, with a carefully curated moderate hike to one of the Catskills’ most magical places, the Balsam Lake Fire Tower; a fire building challenge; an imagination and body expanding movement class; as well as a chance to roast chestnuts, savor the new Spillian Cocktail, the Catskill Fire Tower, and feast throughout the weekend! We’re thrilled to say that part of the proceeds for this weekend will support the work of our great friend and ally, Ann Roberti and the Catskill Mountain Club as they resurrect an historic fire tower on Bramley Mountain.
